Save Tomorrow!

SaveTomorrowBanner

Once upon a time, I wrote paranormal books. I thought that was what I would always write, and then I wrote The Posse, and from there on, my release schedule was heavily skewed toward con rom.

I’m not sorry about that decision, because I love my con rom stories and characters, but at times, I’ve missed my paranormal people. This is why every Halloween, I release a new Recipe for Death book. It keeps my hand in.

Shortly after I began writing contemporary romance, my two youngest kids (then 12 and 17) asked me to consider writing an apocalyptic story that they would feel comfortable reading (that means–don’t put any sex in it, Mom!). I laughed and said I didn’t have a story like that . . . but then I remembered the dream.

I don’t know when I had the dream, but it was at least four years ago. In it, I saw a group of people on the porch of a big house in San Francisco. They were gathered together on the eve of a huge battle against an evil force. I didn’t know anything more about it than there was an air of St. Crispin’s Day there–

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother;

There was a feeling that they knew it was possible that they would never be together like this again, a sort of desperate gaiety . . . but a solidarity, too. None of them regretted being there. And I also knew that one of the women was pregnant.

I never remember my dreams, but this one stuck with me. And I realized that it was part of a greater story, one I’d already begun writing.

Thus was born the Save Tomorrow books.

All of my paranormal books are set in the same world. While they stand alone, both within the world and within their series, the characters cross over, the story lines intersect and overlap, and from Fearless up through The Fox’s Wager, all of the books are leading, to some extent, to the big showdown coming up in The Age of Aquarius.

Below is the reading order for these books. We’re doing a casual read-along in the Temptresses from now through April 7th so if you’d like to join along, be sure you’re a member.

Notes from the Asylum: Nell Speaks

Our favorite villain from The King Series is Nell. This conversation took place at the asylum where she was placed at the end of FEARLESS. . .before the beginning of BREATHLESS. Take it away, Nell.

Dr. Cramer: Good morning, Nell. I’m glad you could be with me today.

Nell: Oh, yes. Because I had a choice.

Dr. Cramer: You always have a choice, Nell. Let’s talk about what happened in the woods that day in King.

Nell: Why?

Dr. Cramer: Because it’s the key event that brought you here to our fine facility.

Nell: Fine. But you’re not going to believe me anyway.

Dr. Cramer: Try me.

Nell: Okay. It’s your hour, after all.

Dr. Cramer: So you’d had a run-in with. . .(looks at notes). . .uh, Tasmyn. And you were unhappy with the lack of resolution.

Nell: I was unhappy with the lack of the blood sacrifice I’d planned. Amber was meant to die, to give me the power jolt I needed. To prove to Marica that I was worthy of her time, when she’d started paying too much attention to Tasmyn.

Dr. Cramer: So you say. You planned to murder this other girl? This Amber?

Nell: Murder is such an ugly word. I planned to use her to facilitate the blood sacrifice. Yes, her survival would’ve been. . .doubtful. But it never happened because Michael and Tasmyn came flying in to save the day. And it was a little while after that I begin to suspect what Tasmyn can do.

Dr. Cramer: And just what did you think Tasmyn could do?

Nell: I know what she can do. She can read minds. Or hear them. Whatever. So I gave her a red herring–making her think I was going to hurt her precious boyfriend Michael–and she fell for it.

Dr. Cramer: How did she fall for it, exactly?

Nell: She left school early and was heading to the clearing the forest, but I waylaid her before that. I knocked her on the head outside of school, took her to the clearing, and used her for the ritual. It was going to be perfect, because she had power, where Amber had none. I was going to drink deep from what she had to offer. It was marvelous.

Dr. Cramer: But that didn’t happen, either.

Nell: No, because Michael came to her rescue again, and so did her other two friends. I might’ve overpowered them, too–I had Michael on the ground, with my knife at his throat–but that stupid Cara brought her father, and he. . .he did something. He had some kind of power, something I’d never felt before. Anyway, they got me. And then you got me.

Dr. Cramer: Nell, you don’t seem to have any regrets. No remorse.

Nell: I don’t.

Dr. Cramer: How can you hope to progress if you don’t see what you did was deeply wrong?

Nell: I don’t hope to progress. I hope to get the hell out of this place and go finish what I started.

Dr. Cramer: Nell, this is a very secure facility, and I don’t think there’s any way you could ever–gah! What’s that? Fire! (runs to doorway) Security! (turns back to office) Nell, let me—Nell? Nell! Where’d she go? Security!

I’m a relative newcomer to Florida, having lived here only seven years. But the state will always hold a place in my heart, since it’s here that I realized my dream of writing and publishing.

My bio says that I’ve been a writer since the invention of the pen, and sometimes it feels that long. I have been creating characters and stories in my head since I was a child. I had never set any of them in Florida, but when we moved to a small town in the middle of the FLmapstate in 2007, and some of my characters had time to be heard, it turned out that living in Florida was part of their story.

Most of my inspiration for The King Series, my YA quartet, came via long drives or day trips. Tasmyn’s last name came from a nursery alongside SR-46 between Lake County and Sanford. The setting for Michael’s family nursery also sprung from that drive. The lakes in Fearless, Breathless and Restless owe their existence to the many lakes around Apopka and in (duh) Lake County.

The town of King itself is nearly a character in the books. I hadn’t realized how important it was until Michael began talking to Tas one day, and it all clicked. King’s physical manifestation is very close to that of Mount Dora, a small and lovely town in Lake County where I spent a good deal of time in our early Florida days. However, the history of King is closer to another famous Sunshine State burg–Cassadega. I had never been there when I wrote Fearless, and once I did visit, much later, I was surprised at how much the two towns–one fictional, one factual–have in common. Both were founded by men who chose the spot based on the idea that it was a place of spiritual congruence. Both maintain the reputation of being somewhat supernatural.

A few of my other books have also found their home in Florida. Of course, Rafe begins his journey in King, though he ends up traveling out of state. Nell also spends some time in the northern part of the state, near the fictional Perriman College (where Tas and Michael attend). THE POSSE, a contemporary romance, is set in a Florida beach town.

Since Tasmyn is a transplant just like me, we decided to play a little game of quick-draw Q and A. I’m interested in some of her answers!

Summer or Winter in Florida? Wait, is there a difference? Juuuust kidding. Winter. Definitely winter.

Disney or Universal? I have to choose between Mickey or Harry? Well, Disney is the favorite of my heart. I don’t love roller coasters, and Disney gives me more options that don’t make me puke.

Sharks or Gators? Sharks, because as long as I stay out of the ocean, they won’t bother me. Gators can turn up anywhere. gatorpic<shudder>

Seminoles or Gators? The Perriman Pelicans will always hold my heart, but I guess the Gators, since I have friends who attend U of F.

Boogie boards or surf boards? Boogie boards. Goes back to the whole shark deal.

Lakes or oceans? Oceans, because I have a bad history with lakes.

Bike Week or Race Week? Again, is there a difference? Well, Bike Week. I’m not a Nascar gal.

Miami or Clearwater? Clearwater. Love the Gulf, love the small-town feel. . .good memories there, too.

orangedownloadSeafood or citrus fruit? Citrus. I’m especially partial to oranges.

Dolphins or Bucs? Dolphins, all the way! GO Fish!

Everglades or Osceola Forest? The Forest. Love the history there, and less chance of gators.dolphinsimages
