We’d just finished the papers when Leo appeared in the doorway of the office. He filled the space, taking my breath away as he leaned on the jamb, grinning. His hair was still damp, and the long-sleeved thermal shirt hugged the roped muscles on his arms. Faded jeans stretched over his long legs. My mouth went dry and all I could think was . . . damn.

Next to me Gia sniffed, but I didn’t miss the gleam of appreciation in her eye. I gave her shoulder a little nudge. “Behave yourself.”

Turning to Leo, I smiled. “Hey. I’m ready to go. Just let me grab my bag.”

He was too fast for me. “I got it.” He slung the canvas carryall over his back. I thought he’d just head for the door, but he stopped, offering his hand to Gia. “I’m Leo Taylor. Nice to meet you.”

Her mouth dropped open a little. “Uh, Gia. Gia Capri. Yeah, nice to meet you, too.” She took his hand, and I was fairly certainly there was a little bit of swooning going on. I tried hard not to giggle.

“When Gia lets go of your hand, we should leave. If we get over to the hospital in the next hour, we can see Nate for a few minutes.”

Leo nodded. “I talked to Coach, and he said as long as I was home by nine tonight, I’m cool for curfew. Let’s go.” He winked at Gia as he freed his hand. “See you around.”

I glanced back at Gia as we left. She gave me wide eyes, fanned herself and mouthed, “WOW.”

Clearly even feminist journalists were not immune to the charms of the Lion.

Daddy’s Music

Today is very special: not only it is #MusicMonday, it would have been my daddy’s 73rd birthday. And it’s been ten years today since I was able to celebrate with him.

He’s been on my mind a lot lately, for many reasons. First, of course, because his birthday is today. And then there is a scene at the end of my just-finished book (WHEN WE WERE US) and again at the start of the next book (HANGING BY A MOMENT) that brings his loss back to me.

And today being a Monday is perfect, because when it comes to music, my father was my biggest influence.

Most of the music I love comes from a place that was part of my daddy. He introduced me to rock n’ roll, to R&B and to pop, as well as country. He told me stories about songs–gave me history and a real connection with the artists and their lives, too.

Today’s playlist contains my father’s favorite music, or songs that were significant in his life. For instance, I know that he did a lip sync to Stagger Lee when he was a freshman in high school. He loved Buddy Holly, too–always. When he was a plebe at West Point, he heard echoes of the song The Lion Sleeps Tonight in upperclassmen’s rooms and was intrigued by the WEEM-oh-wep. And he was so excited about I’m Into Something Good that he made an unheard-of middle of the week phone call to my mom to play it over the phone.

When I was older, he often came home from work excited about a new song he’d heard on the way home. I think that’s how I first heard The Tide is High and Mickey.

He suggested True Love Ways as the first song my husband and I danced to at our wedding. And he also chose Disney Girls as the song he and I danced to–our father/daughter dance. I still can’t hear it without crying.

I should’ve kept my mouth shut, but I was so fucking fed up with him. So angry for reasons that he probably wouldn’t begin to understand. “Oh, yeah? Last I heard, all our classes require attendance. That’s not optional in high school. At least, it isn’t for most of us. Maybe for the great Leo the Lion, the teachers make exceptions.” I couldn’t keep the snarl from creeping into my tone.

“What’s wrong with you? Who pissed in your cereal?” He crossed his arms over his chest and scowled at me. “Did I do something that I don’t remember? Did I miss someone’s birthday or something? Because you and Quinn have both had bugs up your asses.”

“Nice of you to notice, Leo. You must’ve been a real dick to her yesterday, you know? Quinn was pretty upset after school when I walked her home.”

He pulled off the sunglasses, and I could see his bloodshot eyes were narrowed. “I didn’t do anything. She’s the one who’s causing all the shit with my friends, and then I stand up for her, and she ends up yelling at me. Saying I don’t even know her anymore. I don’t know what she expects from me. God, I don’t know what either of you want. It’s like you want to punish me for having other friends. For playing football. For having a goddamn life.”

“You know what, Leo? Keep your fucking friends, your football and your life. Quinn and I don’t need you. We have each other.”

Leo’s lips thinned into a tight line. “You’d like that, wouldn’t you? Come to think of it, Nate, maybe you should be thanking me instead of giving me hell. If Quinn’s so mad at me, that just makes more room for you, doesn’t it? You’ll finally have her all to herself, which is what you’ve always wanted.”

He was so close to the truth, so dangerously near to saying exactly what I was feeling, that my palms began to sweat with both fury and nerves. “At least I’d be smart enough to hold onto her if—if I ever got that chance. I’d never throw away her friendship.”

I’m Reading Never Tear Us Apart by Monica Murphy

One of the great things about finding new authors is finding out they have talented friends, too! I’ve mentioned before that when I began reading Sarina Bowen’s books, I joined a Facebook group called The Locker Room. I’d already read three of the other ‘coaches’ there–Elle Kennedy, Kristen Callihan and Cora Carmack–but to my great delight, I discovered another new favorite–Monica Murphy.

I enjoyed Monica’s THE RULES series, and her One Week Girlfriend quartet. This week, though, I realized she had a brand-new stand-alone, and the idea of it intrigued me. So I picked up Never Tear Us Apart.

The premise of this story is not unfamiliar, sadly; it opens about nine years after the female lead, Katherine, survived an abduction and rape. We learn pretty quickly that she was able to escape her captor only with the help of his then-15-year old son, Will. We also learn that while the two had stayed in touch for a while, eventually they lost each other.

Now twenty-one, Katherine is still trying to get her life back. She’s understandably cautious and has never dated. So when she has a chance encounter with a man who saves her from a mugging, no one is more surprised than Katherine that she is drawn to her rescuer. The two begin dating.

Of course, since the book is told from a dual point of view, we already know that her new friend Ethan is actually Will. He only wanted to check on the girl he’d helped to save. He never intended to deceive her. But now they’re in a relationship of sorts,and each of them has secrets that have the potential to be explosive.

I haven’t finished the book yet, but it’s harder and harder to put down. I’m worried about the fallout when the inevitable happens and Katherine finds out Ethan’s true identity.
